Governor Schwarzenegger Declares February 2008 "WE Connect Working Families Month"
Governor Schwarzenegger today issued the following proclamation declaring February 2008 as the "WE Connect Working Families Month":
PROCLAMATION
California's greatest resource - its people - are working hard to provide bright futures for their communities and their families. But with many struggling to get ahead, it is more important than ever to recognize important programs that provide working families with the immediate support they need and deserve. Because when working families thrive, California thrives.
Maria Shriver, the First Lady of California, is leading the way to empower our working families and individuals throughout the state by connecting them to money, opportunity and dreams through WE Connect. This effort focuses on informing Californians about resources such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which can put more money in the pockets of Californians right now. Unfortunately, more than 600,000 families miss out on this important credit, leaving more than $1 billion unclaimed each year. Our citizens deserve every opportunity to keep as much of their paychecks as possible, and the EITC is a great way to help them achieve a solid financial footing.
In addition, the WE Connect effort works to connect Californians to the Child Tax Credit, College Savings Accounts program, the Golden State Advantage Card program, Lifeline Telephone service, CARE for discounted energy and electricity assistance, California's Low Cost Auto Insurance Program and also highlights educational and job training opportunities.
This innovative public/private partnership will hold community events in February providing free tax preparation assistance and bringing these key services to families in communities throughout the state. Partnering with community organizations, statewide programs, major corporations, media, small businesses and unions, this effort will reach families where they live, eat, shop, work and learn so that they can get connected to money, opportunity and dreams.
With Maria, I am committed to helping Californians learn about the resources available to them so they can better provide for their families and start saving for and investing in their future.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim February 2008, as "WE Connect Working Families Month."
